A couple of commenters decided I should do all of the categories in the 2000s first, so here is the list of people who were considered for roles that were nominated for the Best Actress award from the 2001 ceremony honouring the films of 2000 to the 2020 ceremony honouring films of 2019. Would any of these performances have been better? Would these actresses still have garnered that Oscar nomination? Could they even have won?
Harriet (2019) - When the project first began development in 2015, it was set to star VIOLA DAVIS in the lead role, but that project never came to fruition, leading to the Cynthia Erivo version that we got
A Star Is Born (2018) - Numerous performers were considered for the role of Ally, including JENNIFER LOPEZ, RIHANNA, SHAKIRA, JANELLE MONAE, KESHA, BEYONCÉ and DEMI LOVATO (bear in mind these are the names that were considered just for the role of Ally which went to Lady Gaga, there were other versions of an A Star Is Born remake in development long before this)
Can You Ever Forgive Me? (2018) - JULIANNE MOORE was initially cast as Lee Israel in April 2015, before dropping out that July after creative disputes with Nicole Holofcener, who still intended to direct at that point. Marielle Heller and Melissa McCarthy took over the project in May 2016
Elle (2016) - Paul Verhoeven originally intended the film to be an American production, set in Boston or Chicago, and as such considered many Hollywood actors for the part, including NICOLE KIDMAN, CHARLIZE THERON, JULIANNE MOORE, MARION COTILLARD, DIANE LANE, SHARON STONE and JENNIFER JASON LEIGH, before moving production to France in order to prevent the more controversial material being watered down or removed entirely
Jackie (2016) - Initially the film was to be directed by Darren Aronofsky and star his tgen partner RACHEL WEISZ in the lead role, but the project fell apart once their romantic relationship ended in 2010
Gone Girl (2014) - REESE WITHERSPOON produced the adaptation of the novel with the intention to play Amy as well, but ended up only producing
Gravity (2013) - Multiple actors were prevented from playing the part of Dr Ryan Stone due to scheduling conflicts: ANGELINA JOLIE, NATALIE PORTMAN, MARION COTILLARD and BLAKE LIVELY were all offered the role at one stage or another. Sandra Bullock then won the part over many other actors that were considered, including SCARLETT JOHANSSON and REBECCA HALL
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011) - Many actors were considered for the role of Lisbeth Salander, including EVA GREEN, ANNE HATHAWAY, JENNIFER LAWRENCE, LEA SEYDOUX and ELLEN PAGE, among others
Changeling (2008) - Angelina Jolie won the role of multiple other actors who campaigned for it, including HILARY SWANK and REESE WITHERSPOON
The Devil Wears Prada (2006) - KIM BASINGER was considered for the role of Miranda Priestly
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2004) - KATE BECKINSALE lobbied hard for the role of Clementine, which ended up going to Kate Winslet
Frida (2002) - Hayden Herrera’s biopic of Frida Kahlo was first optioned in 1988, and over the course of development the lead role attracted interest from MERYL STREEP, JESSICA LANGE and MADONNA
Chicago (2002) - TONI COLETTE was first offered the role of Roxie but turned it down. Many actors were then considered, with Rob Marshall saying he met with “10 or more women” including MARISA TOMEI, CHRISTINA APPLEGATE and MILLA JOVOVICH before casting Renee Zellweger
Moulin Rouge! (2001) - COURTNEY LOVE auditioned for the role of Satine, and even helped clear licensing rights for the use of Smells Like Teen Spirit in the film, but she was still beaten out by Nicole Kidman, as were KATE WINSLET, RENEE ZELLWEGER and CATHERINE ZETA-JONES, among others
Bridget Jones’ Diary (2001) - Many actors were offered and turned down the role of Bridget, including TONI COLLETTE, NICOLE KIDMAN, KRISTIN SCOTT THOMAS and EMILY WATSON, with HELENA BONHAM CARTER and TILDA SWINTON also considered for it, among others. RACHEL WEISZ was also mentioned but was considered “too beautiful” for the part (bit of an insult to everyone else who was considered)
Requiem For A Dream (2000) - FAYE DUNAWAY was initially offered the role of Sara, but turned it down
As always, these lists aren’t exhaustive, I only include some of the names in long lists, most of these will have many names attached to them (Gravity and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo have tons), so there will probably be some I missed out
